A powerful typhoon is approaching Japan's Okinawa island chain, packing strong winds and torrential rain. Typhoon Neoguri was said to be moving at 250 kilometres per hour (150 mph), picking up power as it headed north, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. The typhoon was forecast to grow into an "extremely intense" storm by Tuesday, officials added. But it was not set to be as strong as Typhoon Haiyan, which killed thousands of people in the Philippines last year. "It is likely to come closest to Okinawa on Tuesday morning," a meteorological spokesperson told AFP news agency, warning the storm could generate high waves. "Please be vigilant, stay inside buildings and avoid working outside and making unnecessary trips." Local television reports showed fishermen pulling their boats out of water. Fierce Typhoon Neoguri threatens Japanese island of Okinawa

A large, powerful typhoon is growing in force as it barrels toward the Japanese island of Okinawa. Typhoon Neoguri is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon over the course of Sunday, meteorologists say. By the time it nears Okinawa early Tuesday, it's likely to be generating winds as strong as a Category 5 hurricane. Okinawa, where multiple U.S. military facilities are situated, regularly finds itself in the path of big typhoons. Many of the buildings on the island are designed to weather the powerful winds that come roaring in off the Western Pacific. But CNN International Meteorologist Ivan Cabrera warned that Typhoon Neoguri could still be cause for concern for Okinawa residents. "This is scary stuff because what could happen is that this storm could move just to the west of Okinawa," he said. "That would put Okinawa in the worst possible situation." Typhoon Neoguri is making its way towards Japan,.. and it looks like Korea may be affected by it. To give the details, Kim Bo-gyung joins us from the weather center. Bo-gyung, should we be alarmed? There is some cause for concern, yes. The typhoon is accompanied by STRONG WINDS blowing at a rate of over 50 meters per second. At this pace, it's set to hit Okinawa, Japan tomorrow, and land in waters south of Jeju by Wednesday. Typhoon Neoguri should bring nationwide showers tomorrow, which may continue through Wednesday. Conditions look to be nice and sunny for the rest of the week. We'll get two to four typhoons this summer, which is twice the number compared to recent years. Today, it was a GRILLING HOT summer day here in Seoul,... and tomorrow, we have some LIGHT PRECIPITATION forecast for the central regions, but this won't be enough of pull down the temperatures. So we're in for another hot day. On to Tuesday's readings. Seoul hits 31. Cities down south reach the high-twenties. As for other places. Jeju makes it to 28. Dokdo and Mt. Kumgang to 26.
